Film oparty wyłącznie na filmowych materiałach archiwalnych z lat 1980-1984, które znalazły się na Zachodzie. Jest to swoiste kalendarium najważniejszych wydarzeń okresu stanu wojennego od 13 grudnia 1981 – pacyfikacje zakładów pracy, obozy internowania, demonstracje 1 i 3 maja oraz 31 sierpnia i ich brutalne rozbijanie przez MO i ZOMO, opór społeczny, podziemne drukarnie, rozrzucanie ulotek, wizytę Ojca Świętego w czerwcu 1983 r., uroczystość wręczenia Nagrody Nobla dla Lecha Wałęsy, którą odbierała jego żona Danuta, fasadowe uroczystości 40-lecia PRL (22 lipca 1984), ale także wywiady z Lechem Wałęsą, wypowiedzi Zbigniewa Bujaka, unikalne zdjęcia z obrad podziemnej Tymczasowej Komisji Koordynacyjnej „Solidarności”, Msze za Ojczyznę, morderstwo i pogrzeb ks. Jerzego Popiełuszki.

Based solely on original footage from 1980-1984 which found its way to the West, the film is a chronicle of major developments focusing on the declaration of martial law on 13 December 1981 and the ensuing pacification of factories, the internment of Solidarity activists, the crushing by riot police of demonstrations on 1 and 3 May and 31 August, the visit of Pope John Paul II in June 1983, and the Nobel Peace Prize for Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa. The film includes unique footage of the clandestine meetings of Solidarity’s Provisional Coordinating Commission, Father Popiełuszko’s ‘Masses for the Homeland’, his subsequent murder and funeral, as well as interviews with Lech Wałęsa and Warsaw Solidarity leader Zbigniew Bujak.
