Powstanie Niezależnego Związku Zawodowego "Solidarność" i słynnych 21 postulatów, wstrząsnęło pojałtańską Europą. Konsekwencją tych wydarzeń były obrady okrągłego stołu i pierwsze demokratyczne wybory w Polsce. Dla części Europy zaczęła się wiosna wolności. Kolejnym celem stało się przystąpienie krajów Europy Wschodniej do Unii Europejskiej. Mimo piętrzących się trudności w negocjacjach, 1 maja 2004 r. na masztach ustawionych przed Parlamentem Europejskim w Strasburgu załopotały flagi dziesięciu nowych członków Unii Europejskiej. Maszty zostały wykonane w Stoczni Gdańskiej i były darem narodu polskiego dla narodów Europy. (Film zrealizowany dla Parlamentu Europejskiego.)

The establishment of the Independent Solidarity Trade Union and the Twenty One Demands of the striking shipyard workers in Gdańsk were a blow to the political order in Europe shaped as a result of the Yalta Conference. The Round Table talks between the communist regime and Solidarity and the first, partially-free parliamentary elections in June 1989 came as a consequence of the Solidarity revolution. A spring of freedom began for some countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Accession to the European Union of the post-communist countries was a natural consequence of the transformation process. After years of painstaking negotations, on 1 May 2004 the flags of ten new members were raised on the masts in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Made in the Gdańsk Shipayrd, the masts were the gift of the Polish nation to the nations of Europe.
