„Pragnieniem moim jest by Europa suwerenna i wyposażona w wolne instytucje rozszerzyła się kiedyś aż do granic jakie wyznacza jej geografia a bardziej jeszcze historia” - powiedział Jan Paweł II w Parlamencie Europejskim 11 października 1988 r. Pragnienie Papieża i marzenia wielu milionów Polaków spełniły się. 1 maja 2004 roku Polska i 7 innych krajów byłego bloku wschodniego stała się członkiem Unii Europejskiej. Przyniosło to nam wiele korzyści: szybszy rozwój gospodarczy, w ciągu pierwszych 5-ciu lat pozyskaliśmy z UE około 70 mld. zł, bezrobocie spadło (w porównaniu z okresem przedakcesyjnym) o ok. 2 mln (część osób wyjechała z Polski do pracy w innych krajach), zmieniło się oblicze polskiej wsi – rolnicy są największymi beneficjentami akcesji. W grudniu 2007 r. Polska weszła do strefy Schengen, zdecydowanie ułatwiło to Polakom podróżowanie po Europie. W krótkiej prezentacji nie sposób przedstawić wszystkich aspektów 5-ciu lat polskiej obecności w Unii Europejskiej.

‘My wish is that […] sovereign Europe with its free institutions expands one day as far as its boundaries defined by geography or, better still, by history’. This is what Pope John Paul II said in his address to the European Parliament on 11 October 1988. The Pope’s wish and the dreams of many millions of Poles became a reality on 1 May 2004 when Poland, together with nine other post-communist countries, joined the European Union. Membership in the bloc has resulted in a faster economic growth, funds for instrastructure and modernization projects (about 70 billion zlotys during the 2004-2008 period), a fall in unemployment and far-reaching transformations in the countryside, with Polish farmers being the greatest beneficiaries of accession. In December 2007 Poland entered the Schengen borderless zone which facilitates travel around Europe.
